Anti-tobacco camps all over Rajasthan

Will apprise the people of legislation against smoking at public places

  • It will also generate awareness about disastrous consequences of consumption of tobacco.
  • The camps, to be addressed by District and Sessions Judges and other presiding officers of lower courts, will mark the World Anti-Tobacco Day.

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority (RSLSA) will organise special camps at all district and taluka headquarters across the State on Wednesday to apprise the people of the legislation against smoking at public places and generate awareness about disastrous consequences of consumption of tobacco.

The camps, to be addressed by District and Sessions Judges and other presiding officers of lower courts, will mark the World Anti-Tobacco Day.

The RSLSA Member Secretary, J.P. Sharma, said here on Tuesday that the initiative had been planned as part of the Authority's drive to bring about congruence between law and social reforms.

The Authority's Executive Chairperson and Judge of the Rajasthan High Court, Justice Gyansudha Mishra, in a separate message to the people of the State, pointed out that increasing consumption of tobacco was posing a serious risk to the health of people at large.

Ms. Justice Mishra said an anti-smoking legislation, enacted in the State in 1999, had outlawed smoking at public utility places and public vehicles and banned the advertisement or sale of tobacco products within 100-metre radius of educational institutions as well as to youngsters below 18 years.

"The people at large should not only quit the habit of tobacco consumption but should also resist the attempts to popularise tobacco products,'' Ms. Justice Mishra said, and added that the RSLSA would support all initiatives to promote a healthy style of living.
