QUEEN OF WESTERN GHATS: Neelakurinji immortalised in a postage stamp.
A commemorative stamp has been released by the Department of Posts on Kurinji, the legendary blue and white flowers of the Western Ghats. Kurinji is a shrub belonging to the family of Acanthacea and genus Strobilanthes. The Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana), which flowers once in 12 years, is the most famous of the group. The flowering of the species is expected to occur this year in the Nilgiris, Palani hills and the mountain ranges near Munnar. The stamp, released on Monday, is available for sale at the Philatelic Bureau of the General Post Office in Thiruvananthapuram.
