Vocational training for visually impaired

CHENNAI: The National Association for the Blind will conduct vocational training classes for visually impaired persons from June 1 in rehabilitation (11 months), computer (3 months), telephone operator (3 months), music (3 months) in addition to yoga and sports.

Classes will be held on all days except Saturday and Sunday. Visually impaired persons in Tamil Nadu will be eligible to participate in the programme which includes free boarding and lodging. Parliamentary panel visits Cordite Factory

UDHAGAMANDALAM: A six-member Drafting and Evidence Sub-Committee of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language headed by the Rajya Sabha member from Bihar Ramdeo Bhandari inspected the Cordite Factory at Aruvankadu near here on Tuesday. They held discussions with representatives of establishments such as the Defence Services Staff College, the Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited, the Radio Astronomy Centre, the Central Soil and Water Conservation Research Institute, the Pasteur Institute, the Department of Posts and Kendriya Vidyalaya. The Chairman of the Official Language Implementation Committee of Ooty and Coonoor and General Manager, Cordite Factory O.P. Yadava spoke. — Special Correspondent

Rice scheme for old

cardholders sought

CUDDALORE: The Consumer Guild of Tamil Nadu has said families which have old ration cards have been denied entitlements from March 31. Guild secretary C.D. Appavu, in a representation to Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi, said the families had applied for the new ration cards, but were penalised for the delay in the process of issuing the cards. Even before they could ascertain what went wrong, the State Government had come out with the Rs. 2-a-kg rice scheme; slated for launch on June 3. He said if these families were denied the right they would resort to an agitation. The Guild secretary requested the Government to take necessary steps to help the old cardholders. — Special Correspondent

Tanker driver

robbed

VILLUPURAM: Four motorcycle-borne youths allegedly waylaid an edible-oil tanker and snatched away Rs. 5.20 lakh from the driver at Sengarampoondi near here on Monday. The police sources said Devaraj Chettiar of Tindivanam, dealing in provisions, had deployed his tanker lorry to bring palm oil form Pondicherry. He handed over Rs. 5.20 lakh to the driver. The tanker was bound for Pondicherry, when the youths halted the vehicle at Kootteripattu. Two of them entered the cabin and threatened the driver at knifepoint, asking him to divert the vehicle to a grove at Sengarampoondi. The youths allegedly tied the driver and cleaner to a tree and took away the money. — Special Correspondent
