Doctors get conditional bail
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The Madras High Court has granted conditional bail to ten persons, including some doctors, arrested in connection with irregularities in the post-graduate medical entrance examination.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had arrested 11 persons, including seven doctors. They have completed 60 days in judicial custody. The agency is yet to file the charge sheet.
On Tuesday, Justice K.N. Basha granted bail to 10 accused, including P. Ravi Kannan, Vijay Kanna, N. Baskar and P. Satish Kumar. However, he directed them to stay in Chennai for three weeks and appear before CBI officials daily. They are to surrender their passports, if any, should execute a personal bond for Rs. 25,000 and furnish two sureties for a like sum each.
The prosecution case is that the accused had entered into a conspiracy to get top ranks for certain PG medical degree aspirants. Through fraudulent and dishonest means, they obtained a question paper of the entrance examination and scanned it with the help of a "docupen." Then they downloaded it and prepared answers with the help of doctors before sending them to candidates through SMS or cell phones.
The accused received amounts ranging from Rs. 2 lakh to 10 lakh and ensured that their candidates came within the top hundred ranks.
