Karnataka men take trophy

Principal Correspondent

BANGALORE: Karnataka men put up a stellar show to defeat Kerala in straight sets and win the men's title of the 10th Youth National volleyball championship here on Tuesday. Karnataka won 25-23, 25-15, 25-17 in just 51 minutes to claim the trophy and the prize money of Rs. 1.25 lakhs. Kerala got a cash prize of Rs. 75,000 for finishing runner-up.

However, Kerala women held sway over their Karnataka counterparts and won in straight sets at 25-17, 25-18, 25-17.

Karnataka coach Basavaraj Hoshmath played to a strategy and achieved his results. "After yesterday's win over Haryana I knew the title was ours," said Basavaraj.

Nothing seemed to go right for the Kerala side today after the early moments of the first set and it surrendered meekly, without any semblance of a fight.

Hemanth and Girish came up with some resounding smashes and the double block of Mahesh and Ganesh Rai did the Kerala side in.

Thumping win

Earlier, Jomol and Prince Joseph, along with Josme Paul led the Kerala women to a thumping win. Kerala clearly looked streets ahead right from day one of the tournament and encountered no hiccups en route to retaining the trophy.

The results:

Men: Karnataka bt Kerala 25-23, 25-15, 25-17. Third place: Haryana bt U.P. 25-22, 25-19, 25-18.

Women: Kerala bt Karnataka 25-17, 25-18, 25-17; Third place: West Bengal bt Tamil Nadu 25-20, 25-20, 25-20.
