NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Election Commission and the Union Government on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a direction to the Commission to take a decision on petitions seeking the disqualification of 46 MPs and 229 MLAs for holding offices of profit. Taking the petition filed by Jain TV owner and former MP J.K. Jain on record, a division bench, comprising Justices Vijender Jain and Kailash Gambhir, directed the respondents to file their replies by July 25. The petitioner said the Commission had not shown the same alacrity in disposing of the petitions as it had shown in the petition against Jaya Bachchan (Samajwadi Party) for holding an office of profit. Thus, it had failed to perform its duty as provided under Article 103 of the Constitution. Mr. Jain said the President had referred the petitions to the Commission on May 8 but the latter was sitting on them.
