Government plans to set up sports school in every district

Staff Reporter

Schools likely to be launched in the coming academic year

  • First such attempt in country, says Alkod Hanumanthappa
  • Each school will focus on two sports

BANGALORE: Minister for Youth Services and Sports Alkod Hanumanthappa has drawn up a proposal to have one sports school in each district and will soon make a presentation to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy seeking allocation of funds for the project. He hopes to launch the schools in the coming academic year itself.

Mr. Hanumanthappa told presspersons here on Tuesday that the department had some funds that could be used for the project, but a major portion of the yet-to-be estimated cost would have to be specially allocated by the Government, once the Cabinet approved the proposal.

This would be the first project of its kind in the country, Mr. Hanumanthappa said.

In some districts, there were buildings and infrastructure, which only needed to be spruced up. There was also a plan to rope in zilla panchayats to provide infrastructure.

The schools would address the sports education needs of students of classes five to eight, and they would be residential schools with a regular syllabus, with the focus being on sports. Football, hockey, basketball, judo and wrestling were among the sports disciplines that would be taught.

Each district would have a school that focussed on two activities. Belgaum, for instance, would offer judo and basketball to girl students, the Minister added.
