BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday ordered issue of notices to the State Government and other respondents on a petition seeking a direction to Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) and other authorities concerned not to make any further contract appointment of "pourakarmikas" in the city corporation. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice N. Kumar admitted the petition and ordered issue of notices to the respondents. In its petition, the Karnataka State City Corporations Town Municipality Pourakarmikas Maha Union said that they had been deprived of several employment benefits. It said at least 98 per cent of the "pourakarmikas" in civic bodies were working on contract basis. Employees taken on contract were drawing lesser salary than those appointed on regular basis. Terming this as "discriminatory" and "illegal," they urged the court to direct the State to pay them on a par with those working on a regular basis, and to pay them salaries and allowances through cheques. The Bench adjourned further hearing on the issue.
Directive
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice N. Kumar on Tuesday directed the State Government to take steps to appoint an administrator to the Dakshina Kannada Koota Brahamana Mitra Mandali of Bangalore, and hold elections to the organisation.
