CHANDIGARH: In its bid to prevent the State from floods before the onset of monsoon, the Punjab Government had sanctioned a sum of Rs.10 crore for desilting, repair and restoration of drains and for the execution of new flood protection works. Punjab Chief Secretary K R Lakhanpal directed deputy Commissioners of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Patiala and Mansa to be vigilant and get the flood protection works done before the ensuing monsoon season these districts were prone to floods, offcial sources said. A sum of Rs.178.94 crore had also been released for providing Rehabilitation Grant to the riot victims of 1984 and out of which Rs.168.32 crore had already been disbursed, he said while presiding over a meeting of Commissioners and the Deputy Commissioner of the State here today.
He also directed the Deputy Commissioners to complete the Verification of all 4367 fresh claims of riot victims of 1984 for rehabilitation grants by May 31, 2006 to enable the state level committee to consider the
