Guwahati: Sashastra Seema Bal and the Assam Police have begun a joint investigation into the killing of five SSB men in Udalguri to ascertain the motive behind their killing.

The bodies of all the five were recovered from a jungle along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Tuesday, eight days after they were abducted by miscreants from Moradhansiri in Udalguri district on May 21.

Assam Director-General of Police D. N. Dutt told reporters that an Inspector-General of Police from Delhi had been camping at Udalguri for the joint investigation. ``At this moment we are trying to work out the motive behind the killing as it is not yet clear why they were abducted and subsequently killed," the DGP said.

Though the DGP did not name any militant outfit, sources said suspicion fell on the National Democratic Front of Boroland. The outfit however, denied its involvement.

    Governor addresses Assembly

Assam Governor Lt. Gen (retd.) Ajai Singh in his address to the Assam Assembly said the law and order situation had improved. Negotiations had been initiated with a number of insurgent groups and the ceasefire achieved.
