BANGALORE: Nallam Naidu, a former Investigation Officer who retired as Superintendent of Police in Tamil Nadu, has been appointed to assist the prosecution in the disproportionate assets case against the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and others. The wealth case was transferred from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka and a Special Court was set up by the State Government on orders from the Supreme Court to try the case against Ms. Jayalalithaa, her friend Sasikala Natarajan, J. Illavarasi, T.T.V. Dinakaran and V. Sudhagaran. The Supreme Court, some time ago, stayed further proceedings in the case and the Special Court here had been adjourning the matter whenever it came up. After the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) came to power in Tamil Nadu in the recent elections, the Government appointed Mr. Naidu to assist the prosecution in Bangalore. A former Advocate-General of Karnataka and senior counsel B.V. Acharya is the Special Public Prosecutor in the case and advocate Sandesh Chowta is the Assistant Special Public Prosecutor. Sources here said the Tamil Nadu Government had decided to appoint Mr. Naidu to assist Mr. Acharya because he was highly conversant with the case. Mr. Naidu had investigated the disproportionate assets case and filed a charge sheet in a court in Chennai. His appointment is seen by the legal fraternity here as a signal that the DMK will seek early hearing of the case.
