Sharp rise in tomato prices
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
The cost of tomato has gone up to Rs. 24 per kg in retail vegetable shops and neighbourhood markets due to a fall in the arrival of stock at the Koyambedu Vegetable Market.
Prices of the vegetable vary because the crop is susceptible to even small changes in weather. Vegetable vendors say that recent rainin Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh adversely affected the crop.
Hence, there is a drop in the tomato stock that arrives in Chennai. The vegetable that was sold for Rs. 12-Rs. 15 just about a week ago has become costlier by Rs. 10 in retail markets. Prices are likely to remain high for at least a week, says Chandran of the Koyambedu Licensed Vegetable Vendors Association.
The price of beans was also about Rs. 22 per kg on Monday. Brinjal, however, remains low-priced. In the wholesale market, the cost is Rs. 4 per kg. It costs about Rs. 3-Rs. 4 more in the neighbourhood retail shops. The cheapest vegetable is cabbage, priced at Rs. 2 per kg.
The wholesale prices of other vegetables are: Onion - Rs. 5, lady's finger - Rs. 7, bitter gourd - Rs. 6, drumstick - Rs. 16.
