CHENNAI : Chennai Corporation council on Tuesday approved a resolution to submit an elaborate development plan for the city and its suburbs to the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission. The Opposition councillors who were present when the resolution was passed hailed Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin for envisaging the projects to be submitted to the Mission.
Improved infrastructure
They said Chennai residents could now look forward to several projects that would have a long-term vision for the city and substantially improve its infrastructure. Several projects that have been discussed over the past decade including flyovers at congested road junctions, multi-level parking facilities and drainage facilities find mention in the comprehensive development plan that will be submitted. Project proposals to the tune of Rs. 1,700 crore have been sought for the improvement of urban transport facilities for the Chennai Metropolitan Area. Projects with reference to the Chennai Corporation include the mechanical compost plants planned for Kodungaiyur and Perungudi, apart from improvements to the solid waste management chain. The Corporation council also passed another resolution on Tuesday on the modernisation of the Perambur cattle slaughterhouse. It stated that the civic agency's earlier plan to execute the project through a build, own and transfer agreement with a private party had been delayed incessantly. Now the Corporation planned to execute the works by itself by employing a consultant to come up with the designs. According to sources, the private party whose BOT contract was terminated by the Corporation citing delays had filed a case with the Madras High Court. Officials said the work on modernisation of the abattoir would begin in accordance to the court ruling in the cases. The Corporation council passed more than 120 resolutions.
