CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Letika Saran on Tuesday distributed prizes to participants of the summer camp, held as part of the Arumbu project for the children of Police Boys Club, here on Tuesday.

The Boys Clubs was instituted to provide children growing up in areas without playgrounds, electricity or access to tuitions with these facilities, she said. She expressed the hope that a government order for the formation of Girls Clubs would be passed soon.

Joint project

The Arumbu project is a joint project between the Chennai City Police and Aide et Action (AeA), an international non-governmental organisation working to provide education to under-privileged children in developing nations.

Inaugurated in September last year, the project hopes to strengthen the infrastructure, activities and reach of the 78 Boys Clubs in the city in the next four years.

Learn skills

While AeA hopes to reach around 10,000 children and youth through the project, around 350 participated in a summer camp held over this month at various Police Boys Clubs.

They learnt various skills such as pottery painting, street theatre, music and spoken English.

The valedictory function was held on Tuesday at the Kamarajar Maligai in Ayanavaram. Prizes were given to winners of various competitions and children presented cultural programmes.

The products the children had crafted through the duration of the camp were on display.
