Staff Reporter
KOCHI:
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), southern region, has welcomed the Centre's move urging State Governments to set targets to the tune of Rs.2,000 crores annually for investments in infrastructure projects through public-private partnerships (PPPs).
CII (southern region) chairman M. Lakshminarayanan said in a statement here on Tuesday that Finance Minister P. Chidambaram's initiative to promote infrastructure projects in States on the PPP mode would speed up the economic development of the region through large-scale private investment.
He complemented the Finance Minister for mooting the idea of setting up exclusive PPP cell in the Planning/Finance Departments with a nodal officer in the State Governments to coordinate with the Centre and other agencies on infrastructure projects. He said the CII had identified 10 PPP projects in infrastructure in the southern region States covering Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Hyderabad, Kochi and Pondicherry. CII has also conducted feasibility studies for these projects.
CII has already initiated solid waste treatment projects in Kochi and Alappuzha in partnership with the local Corporations and Andhra Pradesh Technology Development and Promotion Centre. CII is also involved in the setting up of treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility for industrial waste in Kochi.
