Councillors detained for disturbing MCD functioning

Staff Reporter

Were disturbing the normal functioning of MCD

NEW DELHI: Two independent Councillors were on Tuesday detained by the police after the Municipal Commissioner's Office at Town Hall lodged a complaint that they were disturbing normal functioning of the civic body.

The two Councillors -- Asif Mohammad Khan of Okhla and Sunil Bidhuri of Harkesh Nagar -- have been sitting on dharna outside the Municipal Commissioner's Office since May 25 demanding a status report on money spent on various projects sanctioned by them from their Councillor's Fund in 2005-06. After a complaint was lodged with the police on Tuesday afternoon, they were taken to the Chandni Chowk police station and detained. They were later released.

However, both the Councillors have threatened to continue their protest till all financial records of the projects sanctioned by them in 2005-06 are furnished to them. They have alleged that the MCD officials had bungled in carrying out various project works and were now not giving details about it. They also demanded a high-level inquiry into the entire episode.

Mr. Bidhuri said people of his ward were complaining that projects sanctioned by him last year had not been completed. "Now I want to know where around Rs.90 lakhs sanctioned by me from my fund for various projects was spent. It is my right to know as I will be held responsible for any bungling committed in carrying out these projects. So far the MCD officials have refused to give me details about the projects which means that there is something wrong which needs to be probed thoroughly," he added.
