Pondicherry: R. Radhakrishnan (elected from Kuruvinatham in Pondicherry region) and A.V. Sreedharan (Palloor constituency in Mahe) will in all probability get elected unopposed respectively to the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly on the floor of the House on Thursday when the Assembly resumes its meeting. No one else has filed nominations except these two legislators. The deadline to file nominations was over at noon on Wednesday. Mr. Radhakrishnan, an MBA graduate, is 34 years old. He has been returned to the Assembly for the second successive term. Mr. Radhakrishnan had served as chairman of the Pondicherry Slum Clearance Board and had evolved a number of schemes to replace huts with concrete structures in a phased manner. The 61-year-old A.V. Sreedharan, a senior member of the Assembly, has been holding the Palloor constituency without break since 1985. He has been president of the Block Committee of the Congress in Palloor for the last 25years. He was chairman of Assurances and Estimates Committee at some stages in the Pondicherry Assembly. When the Congress government was formed under the head of V. Vaithilingam in 1991 Mr. Sreedharan had served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister. He was also the Congress party's Parliamentary Party Secretary in 1996 when the party was main Opposition. He had served as government whip in 2000. He was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister in last Assembly. Mr. Sreedharan was a stage actor and was a member of the Palloor based Kairali Kalaalaya. He was associated with labour movement and had served as secretary of the Kerala based INTUC for some time. Mr. Sreedharan was appointed the pro tem speaker on May 29 by the Lt. Governor to perform the duties of the Speaker. He had then sworn in the new legislators.
