Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the Chief Secretary to file an action taken report (ATR) on its earlier directions for giving effect to all the awards passed by the Special Lok Adalats held for mitigating the hardships of tsunami victims. The Bench of Justices K.S. Radhakrishnan and K.T. Sankaran issued the direction when writ petitions complaining about the failure of the Government to implement the awards came up before it. The Court had reminded the Government that the public had contributed to help the victims and it was the duty of the Government to see that the funds were not diverted.
Marad inquiry report
The Bench also directed the Government pleader to inform the Court about publication of the Marad Inquiry Commission Report and also the time required to implement it recommendations. The petition was filed by the People's Forum for Natural Justice. The petitioner pointed out that the publication of the report and action on the report were highly necessary for the security of the State. The petitioner said the Government was yet to take follow-up action on the report.
Cherkalam summoned
A full Bench comprising Justices J. B. Koshy, A.K. Basheer and K.P. Balachandran directed the former Minister Cherkalam Abdulla to appear in person before the Court on June 21 in a contempt-of-court case. The contempt petition was filed by P. Damodaran, secretary, Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti, Kasaragod. According to him, the demonstrations organised in honour of Mr. Abdulla's appointment as Minister in 2001 at Cheruvathur in the district had violated the court's guidelines on demonstrations and processions. Although he had submitted an apology, the Court did not accept it.
TDB's opinion sought
A Division Bench comprising Justices R. Bhaskaran and K.T. Sankaran has directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to submit its remarks on the suggestions made by the Vigilance Department to prevent the recurrence of incidents of irregularities in the conduct of mess at the Sannidhanam and Sabarimala. The Bench also allowed the Vigilance Department to register cases against six TDB officials who were found involved in the case.
