Further remand for Pravin Mahajan

Plea for undergoing psychiatric tests adjourned

MUMBAI: Pravin Mahajan, held on the charge of murdering his elder brother, BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, was on Wednesday further remanded to judicial custody till June 14 by a local court which also put off till June 8 the hearing on his plea for undergoing psychiatric tests.

Pravin was not produced before the court and the video conferencing also could not be held between the magistrate and Pravin due to a technical fault.

Extending the judicial remand of the accused, Magistrate A. Waghmare observed that investigations were on and hence the prosecution was justified in seeking extension of Pravin's judicial custody. He asked the police to produce the accused before him at the next hearing.

Pravin urged the court to subject him to psychiatric tests to determine the state of his mind prior to the incident and on April 22 when he had shot at his brother.

The Magistrate posted Pravin's plea for hearing on June 8. Twice earlier, the court had rejected his plea for psychiatric tests. Being aggrieved, he moved the court with a fresh plea.

Pravin's lawyers Nandkumar Rajurkar and Satyaki Varma pleaded that the court should direct the Worli police to probe the circumstances and gather evidence which would have a bearing on the state of the mind of the accused on the day of the incident and before it.

Defence lawyers alleged that the police were collecting evidence which was only beneficial to the prosecution and were not gathering evidence which could benefit the accused. - PTI
