HYDERABAD: All road restoration works throughout the twin cities will be taken up and completed by June 10 while desilting of storm water drains will be expedited, MCH Commissioner Sanjay Jaju has said. Taking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he asserted that desilting was a continuous process and this year, the job was divided into 100 works as compared to 44 earlier so as to ensure that there was a package for each division. "Building debris and other silt got swept into drains along with rain which we are trying to clear. We are also taking remedial steps at all waterlogging points. Our men and machinery have been kept alert too," he said. Two hundred water stagnation points were identified and improvements made aligning the road network with the storm water drains besides also laying wider pipes down below. Referring to the contractors' logjam, Mr. Jaju claimed some works were going on and notices were issued to erring contractors. "All contractual obligations have to be fulfilled wherever agreements were signed," he made it clear. "For fresh contracts, clarification was sought from the Government if the prices could be hiked as per the new GO. Contractors have given a commitment to complete the works during a recent meeting and we will re-assess the situation after a week," he said.
Standing panel meet
Meanwhile, at the Standing Committee meeting presided over by Mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy, members pulled up the engineering staff for "shoddy" desilting work of nalas. Chief Engineer Dhan Singh claimed work was being done as per norms. Similarly, parking spaces too raised the members' ire with many pointing out that MCH was losing revenue through the pre-paid card system. Revenue when the slots were auctioned was Rs. 7 crores. This had come down to Rs. 1.4 crores, which does not even meet the salary bill of security personnel. The committee felt that illegal parking lots were thriving including those in private commercial complexes.
