This Day That Age
The introduction of a system of incentives and bonus in the Indian Railways similar to that prevalent on the Soviet Railways has been suggested by the Estimates Committee of the Lok Sabha. The 33rd report of the Committee on the Railway Ministry was presented to the House on May 31. According to the Indian delegation which visited the Soviet Union last year, there was a healthy rivalry between the railway units in that country in fulfilling their respective targets. A percentage of the gross income planned to be earned on each system was ordinarily earmarked for a fund for giving cash prizes individually or collectively to staff who had contributed to the fulfilment of the targets. As an incentive for reducing maintenance costs and for increasing mileage of engines between overhauls, the Soviet Railways have a system of paying special bonus to their drivers and shed maintenance staff.
