Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has pledged his body to a non-governmental organisation for use in medical education and research after his death.
Pledge in front of
party colleagues
"Mr. Bhattacharjee signed the pledge on March 8 in the presence of State Industries Minister Nirupam Sen and party [CPI-M] leader Madan Ghosh, who acted as witnesses," Brojo Roy, general secretary of the NGO, Gono Darpan, said here. The paperwork was completed on Tuesday. Jyoti Basu, former Chief Minister; Biman Bose, secretary of the State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist); and Surjya Kanta Mishra, Health Minister, have also made such pledges. The body of Anil Biswas, former State secretary of the CPI (M), was pledged for medical research. The NGO, which acts as a coordinator and makes available bodies to medical colleges, is also collaborating with the State Government to launch an organ transplantation programme within six months. "This is important especially in the case of patients who are brain-dead as their heart, lungs, pancreas and other viable organs can be transferred to moribund patients," Mr. Roy said.
