Aircel plans to invest Rs. 552 cr. in T.N.

Signs on actor Surya as brand ambassador

CHENNAI: Aircel Cellular Limited, mobile telephone operator in Tamil Nadu and Chennai, has planned a capital expenditure Rs. 552 crore for 2006-07 for expanding its network in Tamil Nadu, according to KVP Baskar, Chief Executive Officer of Aircel Cellular, which was acquired recently by Maxis Communication Berhad of Malaysia.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Baskar said the company was aggressively spreading its wings across the country, especially in Tamil Nadu and in the North.

Mr. Baskar said the company's pan India movement had already started with its entry into Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and other Northeastern parts of the country.

It would roll out its operations in Bihar and Himachal Pradesh by next quarter that would increase its presence in nine circles in the North and two in the South. The company's subscriber base was growing by 50 per cent every year.

The subscriber base for Tamil Nadu and Chennai was over 25 lakh and for the North it was over 4.25 lakh.

He said Maxis would expand its operation through either organic or inorganic way. If the company's pan India expansion takes place, it would cost $700 million to the promoters.

Aircel has signed a one-year contract with actor Surya as its brand ambassador.
