Letters to the Editor
The editorial is an apt and necessary wake-up call to stall the erosion of the pre-eminence of Parliament. One of our greatest Presidents, K.R. Narayanan, who was extremely proactive on issues of social equity and constitutional propriety sent back only certain Cabinet decisions like those concerning Article 356 for reconsideration but not those taken by Parliament. This contagion can be leveraged by vested interests as unsuccessfully tried to the hilt in the West Bengal elections.
Kasim Sait,
The President has a ceremonial role to play under our Constitution. Any overreach of his role undermines the democratically elected government. Even if he returns a bill in good faith, the opposition parties tend to exploit the situation to their advantage. The office of Governor has already been diluted because of its politicisation. We cannot afford to politicise the office of President too.
Anusha Singh,
