Letters to the Editor
The Tamil Nadu Government's decision to suspend the screening of the film, The Da Vicni Code, is unfair. Particularly when it has been released elsewhere in the country. Why should the people of some States alone be denied the privilege of seeing a much-awaited movie? The argument that it might hurt the feelings of Christians is unacceptable. So many Tamil movies portray caste differences blatantly. They are never banned. The Da Vinci Code is being screened with a disclaimer that it is a work of fiction.
Lakshmi Ganesh,
The move is totally uncalled for. This is no way to educate the masses. The minorities know about their religion and works of fiction cannot shake their faith.
Yasmeen Khan,
Is Tamil Nadu going the Gujarat way? Why should the people be deprived of seeing a film they might enjoy? Those who feel their sentiments may be wounded need not see the film.
Maggie Thomas,
The move reflects the fragile state of freedom of expression in Tamil Nadu. It is naïve on the part of politicians to believe that a ban on a movie based on a bestseller will achieve any purpose at all. Can movies affect a religion known for its endearing and enriching history?
G. Sasidaran,
J. Godwin Prem Singh,
