Pondicherry: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislator M. A. S. Subramanian expressed his anguish and dismay on the floor of the House on Thursday when he found that no decision had been taken on the ``Leader of the Opposition.'' Intervening during the proceedings of the Assembly when members were greeting the newly elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Dr. Subramanian said it had been the convention of the House that whenever a new Speaker was elected he (the Speaker) should be conducted to the seat of the Presiding Officer by the Chief Minster and Leader of the Opposition. He said there appeared to be a breach of convention when the Chief Minister alone accompanied R. Radhakrishnan to the Speaker's seat. Earlier All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislature party leader A. Anbalagan said (while felicitating the new incumbents) that he had written a letter to the Lt. Governor and also to the Assembly Secretary making out the case that the status of opposition should be given to the AIADMK. He said if the Dravida Munentra Kazhagam was offered the status it would only mark a mockery of democracy, because the Congress with ten members on its side had formed a minority Government with unconditional and outside support of the Dravida Munentra Kazhagam and a few other parties (constituting the Democratic Progressive Alliance) here.
