Special Correspondent

Their unanimous election is greeted with joy and jubilation

Pondicherry: Members cutting across party lines felicitated the new Speaker R. Radhakrishnan and the new Deputy Speaker, A.V. Sreedharan, on the floor of the House on Thursday. The unanimous election was a matter of joy and jubilation to most of the members who greeted the new incumbents one after another.R. Viswanathan (CPI) said that the Assembly did not belong to any particular party but to the people at large. Hence whenever the members raised issues of the people there should be full-fledged replies to them. Former Education Minister K. Lakshminarayanan (PMC), who pledged full support and cooperation for the smooth conduct of the proceedings, hoped that the Speaker would be even-handed to enable the members to raise people's issues.

The new entrants to the Assembly, K.R. Anandaraman and P. Arulmurugan (both belong to the PMK), Om Sakthi Sekar (AIADMK), N.Anandh and V.K. Ganapathy (both belonging to the PMC), P.R. Siva (MDMK) and J. Narayanasamy (Independent), who felicitated the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, said that those elected to the House for the first time like them should be given considerable opportunity to champion the rights of the people.

V.M.C. Sivakumar (DMK) elected from Neravy constituency in Karaikal said that Karaikal district had been neglected for decades together. He said that the impact of neglect was seen in the verdict the people of Karaikal gave to the Democratic Progressive Alliance in the recent Assembly polls.

(Of the six seats there the Congress, which contested four constituencies, drew a blank.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam which contested the remaining two seats emerged victorious.

M.A.S. Subramanian, Nazeem, S.P. Sivakumar, R.Siva and R. Rajaraman (all belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), A. Anbalagan (AIADMK), A. Marimuthu (Independent) and M.Kandasamy (Congress) greeted the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker and sought adequate opportunity for members to air people's grievances on the floor of the House.
