Election Commission recognises PMC

Party accorded status based on poll performance

PONDICHERRY: The Pudhucherry Munnetra Congress has been recognised as a State party in the Union Territory by the Election Commission.

Releasing a copy of the letter from the EC to reporters, MLA and PMC leader K. Lakshminarayanan said it had been accorded the status based on its performance in the Assembly elections. The party won three seats and more than seven per cent of the votes in the election.

The Election Commission has also allotted the symbol of the `bell' to the party.

The number of recognised political parties in Pondicherry has now gone up to four. The other parties are the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Pattali Makkal Katchi.

On the civic body elections, he said members could file applications from June 1 at the party office. The last date to submit the application would be June 4.

The party leadership had decided to be a constructive Opposition, he said.
