Pondicherry: R. Radhakrishnan and A.V. Sreedharan were elected the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Pondicherry Assembly on Thursday.

As soon as the House commenced its proceedings, pro-tem Speaker A. V. Sreedharan announced the election of Mr. Radhakrishnan to the post of Speaker as no one else had filed nomination. On assuming charge, the new Speaker announced that Mr. A. V. Sreedharan will be the Deputy Speaker, as there was no other nomination from any legislator.

Mr. Radhakrishnan (34), an MBA graduate, is the second youngest Speaker of the House. In 1967, M. O. H. Farook became the Speaker at 28 years. (Mr. Farook is now India's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia). Mr. Radhakrishnan was elected from Kuruvinatham constituency for the second successive term.

Mr. Sreedharan (61), a senior member, was elected for the sixth time in succession from Palloor constituency in Mahe region.

After the election of Mr. Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy accompanied him to the Speaker's chair.

Although the pro tem speaker said that the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition would conduct Mr. Radhakrishnan to the seat only Mr. Rangasamy was seen accompanying Mr. Radhakrishnan as no decision had been taken so far on the Leader of the opposition in the Assembly.

Mr. Sreedharan occupied the seat of the Deputy Speaker amidst greetings from all the legislators.
