Corrections and clarifications

  • The caption of the photograph for Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss attending to a patient at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on Wednesday morning, said, "Later in the evening, the resident doctors called off their agitation ... ." The heading for the report was "Resident doctors end agitation" (June 1, 2006, page 1). A reader says that the caption and the heading are inaccurate as the fact is that the resident doctors called off their "strike" in view of the Supreme Court's order and have not given up their agitation against the reservation policy.

  • "Presspersons walk out of Assam taking exception to ruling" ("Variety", June 1, 2006) was the heading that puzzled a reader. It should have been "Presspersons walk out of Assam Assembly taking exception to ruling", as the report was on the ruling of the Speaker on the authenticity of newspaper reports. Another reader points out that the report says that the presspersons were pacified and returned to the press gallery. It would have been proper to highlight the truce effected subsequently.

  • "Ups and Downs — A genius with shaky maths" ("Newscape", May 23, 2006), a Guardian report on how archival papers show Albert Einstein's struggles and failures, has a reader pointing out errors and raising questions. He finds the comment on Einstein's "shaky grasp of mathematics" objectionable. He points out that the scientist was never at Princeton University and throughout was at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. His most important work was done in 1905 and he won the Nobel Prize in 1921. How then could the "mathematical virtuosity" of Straus, who was Einstein's assistant from 1944 to 1947, give "a framework to Einstein's intuitive vision of the universe," the reader asks. He also points out that the source of this quote is not mentioned in the story.

  • A reader points to an error in the heading "Peddling their way across the country to create awareness about AIDS" ("Region", Delhi city, May 31, 2006, Page 2). "Peddling" is from "peddle" (verb: to sell or offer for sale from place to place). These two men from Andhra Pradesh are "pedalling" across the country.
