HUBLI: Prahlad Joshi, MP from Dharwad North, has urged the Agriculture Minister to take measures for distribution of quality seeds in adequate quantity to farmers of Gadag and Dharwad districts.

In a letter sent to Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur, which was released to the media here on Thursday, Mr. Joshi said that with the early arrival of monsoon, farmers in the districts had begun agricultural activities and were in need of quality seeds.

According to sources, Dharwad District Agriculture Department is in need of 20,000 quintals of seeds for distribution. But only 10,000 quintals were available in the district. The district administration and Agriculture Department have to take necessary measures immediately. Otherwise, it will lead to confusion as it happened last year.

For the kharif season, there is heavy demand for green gram seeds in Dharwad and Gadag districts, where there is likely to be a shortage of 1,000 quintals. There was the same kind of apprehension over availability of groundnut seeds too, he said.

Cotton seeds

According to an estimate, there is a demand for 150 quintals of DCH cotton seeds in Dharwad district. Agriculture Department officials have said that only 35 quintals were available with them. In Gadag, there is demand for 19,000 quintals, Mr. Joshi said. The MP has urged the Minister to take necessary measures to ensure proper supply of quality seeds.
