High courtround-up Five PG students granted relief; they have to pay Rs. 1.7 lakh instead of Rs. 6 lakh each

Bangalore: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday granted relief to five postgraduate students of the dental course and directed the management of their college, a private institution, to charge the fees fixed by the Fee Fixation Committee.

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice Manjula Chellur, directed the college to permit the students to attend classes after collecting the fees prescribed by the committee.

The students moved the court after R.V. Dental College, Bangalore, demanded Rs. 6 lakh as fees. They said the fees were high and they could not pay. But they were willing to pay the fees fixed by the committee.

The college contended that the students, who were admitted under the management quota, had paid Rs. 6 lakh as fees last year and they should pay the same amount this year. It said the fees fixed by the committee, Rs 1.77 lakh, was too low.

Life term for murder

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday commuted to life term the sentence of death awarded by a trial court to a person found guilty of the murder of a two-year-old girl in Davangere.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice B. Padmaraj and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, commuted the sentence as the murderer had no criminal antecedents.

Jadhav of Davangere was charged with murder of a girl. State Public Prosecutor Dore Raju told the court that Jadhav had strangled the child, taken away her ornaments, and dumped the body in a train bound for Hubli.

CoD files report

The Corps of Detectives (CoD) has completed investigation of a case of impersonation and fraudulent sale of land at a village near Belandur in Varthur hobli, Bangalore, and filed a report before the High Court.

Sometime ago, the court directed the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police, CoD, to investigate the sale of the land and file a report after the petitioners — Kamalamma and her three children, B.G. Jeevanprakash, B.G. Gajendrababu and B.G. Lakshmiprasanna — urged it to direct the police to take cognisance of the complaint filed by them against the impersonators who had attempted to sell their land.

The petitioners said they were the legal representatives of Guruva Reddy, who owned two acres and 24 guntas at Devarabisnahalli, Belandur. They alleged that some persons impersonated them and sold their land to Devireddi Basappa Dambal. The sale deed was registered before the Sub-Registrar, Koramangala.

The petitioners said they registered a complaint on July 19, 2004 with the HAL police about impersonation and fraudulent sale of the land.

The HAL police, in their affidavit, said that on October 18, 2003, a notice appeared in a section of the press on sale of the land. They said that on December 2, 2004, they arrested Parvathamma alias Pali (57), her son, Poonacha, and Shiva alias Chandrashekar. During the investigation, Parvathamma "confessed" and the others accused had impersonated Ms. Kamalamma and her children. They appeared before the sub-registrar and impersonated the legal heirs of Guruva Reddy. Based on the information given by them, the police arrested Prakash Reddy (32) and Muniraju.

When the matter came up on Thursday, Justice K.L. Manjunath ordered the person claiming to hold general power of attorney (GPA) for Kamalamma and her children to place before the court the original GPA. Justice Manjunath noted that only photocopies of the GPA had been produced. He adjourned further hearing of the case.
