BJP plans to change its strategy

Special Correspondent

New leadership will be elected in three months, says Sekhar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The BJP plans to change its electoral strategy in the State. This is in view of the realisation that a different strategy was needed to make gains in the bipolar politics of the State.

The party spokesman B. K. Sekhar told mediapersons that the party would discuss change of strategy at a meeting to be convened shortly. National leaders would attend the meeting. The meeting was planned on the basis of a discussion on election results at the national executive of the party.

The spokesman said the UDF and the LDF shifted their votes to either of them when the BJP stood a chance of victory in constituencies such as Manjeswaram and Palakkad.

Mr. Sekhar said that a new leadership for his party would be elected in three months. Enrolment of new members would begin from June 12. The membership campaign would continue for two weeks.

He said that about 100 BJP workers led by party State president P. S. Sreedharan Pillai would leave on Friday for participation in the dharna in protest against the collapse of rule of law in Jammu and Kashmir. Hindus were forced to flee from Jammu because of selective attacks by the extremists. The party was organising a week-long dharna against this, daring the ban orders. The first day's dharna would be by the contingent from Kerala.

He said the party would organise an agitation if the Government did not check increase in petrol prices by reducing the taxes. Secretary (Organisation) of the BJP for the Southern Region P. P. Mukundan, in a statement, said that the terrorist attack on the RSS headquarters in Nagpur should be viewed seriously and strong action taken to suppress the terrorists.

They were targeting not only individuals but organisations also. The strong nationalist stand of the RSS had provoked the terrorists.

He congratulated the Maharastra police for killing the terrorists who had carried modern weapons and explosives.
