Professional burglars' involvement suspected

CHENNAI: Two thefts were reported from residential areas in Anna Nagar. A house break-in was reported from Kambar Street in Mehta Nagar, Aminjikarai. Susheela, a retired Central Government employee, had gone out on Wednesday afternoon. She returned in the evening to find that the front door had been broken open and 49 sovereigns of gold, Rs. 10,000 and some silver articles were missing.

According to senior police officials, the nature and timing of the offence points to the involvement of "professional burglars".

"It happened during the day and the house is located on the main road. We suspect it to be the handiwork of a single person," said a senior police official.

The second case of theft was reported from an apartment in `R' Block in Anna Nagar on Thursday morning.

According to police, Kiran from Dhanam apartments approached them saying 35 sovereigns of gold and Rs. 2 lakh worth diamond jewellery was missing from an almirah. The servant she had engaged the day before was also missing.

"They appointed Lakshmi on Wednesday afternoon. In the evening, they went out leaving Lakshmi and their other servant maid at home. Ms. Kiran and family came to us on Thursday morning after they found the jewellery as well as the new maid missing," said the Anna Nagar police. According to a senior police official, the incident involving a household worker could have been avoided if the family had verified her past records before appointing her.

. "The offence happened despite patrolling. We will intensify patrolling and ensure men are on beat duty and catch the offender," the official said.

Woman robbed

A woman has complained to Pallavaram police that she was robbed of gold jewels weighing about 40 sovereigns while travelling in a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus on Wednesday. Pallavaram police said Ranjani, a resident of Avadi had boarded a bus to reach Pallavaram, to call on her parents.

She told police that a woman passenger seated next to her picked up a conversation and got down at Tirumullaivoyal. When she got down at the Pallavaram bus stand, she noticed that her bag was torn and the valuable were missing, the woman said.
