CHENNAI:
Porur's local elected representatives took the first step towards establishing an underground drainage system in the panchayat.
At a council meeting on Wednesday, the list of sites available within the panchayat limits for setting up pumping stations were identified and approved. A total of three pumping stations would be required to service the sewage disposal needs of the village panchayat with an official population of 28,000.
The project for provision of piped water to all residents moved to the second stage with the approval of a Rs. 72-lakh estimate.
At present, only residents along the main line have received water connections.
The estimate would have to be sent to the Collector for approval.
Panchayat Chairman Sivaprabhu said that 13 road works, estimated to cost a total of Rs. 70 lakh, were approved.
Tenders would be called for in three stages in early June.
All underground drainage system projects should ideally have governmental or CMDA participation to cover the city's adjoining suburban areas completely.
At present, local bodies adjoining the Chennai Corporation have completed or begun work on UGD projects with funds, including loans from the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Fund and public participation.
