`King of fruits' holds court

221 varieties on display at Jubilee Hall


  • 31 commercial varieties put up in 20 stalls
  • Mangoes grown in 10 lakh acres across the State
  • Estimated production of fruit put at 31.35 lakh tonnes

    HYDERABAD: Sensation, Terpentine, Lal Kathra, Patara... .. Don't get intrigued by the names, they are some of the 221 varieties of the `King of Fruits' on display at the three-day mango show which was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister, N.Raghuveera Reddy at the Jubilee Hall here on Thursday.

    The biggest fruit on display is Sora (average wt. two kg) while the smallest is Chekara Guthi ( 75 gms). Banganapalli, Suvarnarekha, Dasheri, Alphonsa, Totapari, Pedda rasam, Himayath and Tellagulabi are among the 31 succulent commercial varieties being exhibited in 20 stalls.

    The stalls have been put up by progressive farmers, processing units, DWCRA groups, exporters, Non-Governmental Organisations and those dealing with post-harvest technology and micro-irrigation systems.

    New hybrids, pickle varieties, home- made and commercial mango products are also on sale.

    First of its kind

    Talking to reporters, Mr.Reddy said that this was the first time such a big show was organised.

    He said that mangoes were being sold at lower than the prevailing market prices.

    The king of fruit was grown in 10 lakh acres in the State and the estimated production was 31.35 lakh tonnes.

    He stressed the need to increase exports.
