Tout held; railway tickets seized

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) nabbed a tout near computerised passenger reservation ticket counter at Podanur, and seized tickets worth several thousands.

Investigations revealed that the tout was operating with the connivance of the staff at the reservation counters. The arrest and seizure occurred when the Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, was inspecting the Coimbatore junction. Following a tip off, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, RPF, Morris Fernandez, ordered a crackdown.

Agency owner

Pon Manickaraj (30) of Ramanathapuram was arrested, and 26 tickets worth Rs. 18,332, and 42 cancelled tickets were seized. There were five time barred - invalid tickets - in his possession. These tickets could be redeemed for fifty per cent of the fare paid while reserving them.

The tout was earlier a travel agency owner. The connivance of the staff at the reservation counters had been taken up with the higher officials.
