Cashew workers' plea to reopen factories
Staff Reporter
KOLLAM:
Pro-Left trade unions in the cashew sector have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan, Agriculture Minister Mullakara Ratnakaran, and Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, highlighting the various long-pending demands of cashew workers.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, leaders of the trade unions said their prime demand was initiation of steps to end the commission processing system which deprived the workers of their statutory rights and benefits.
They sought steps to reopen factories remaining closed in the private sector, closure of processing units which do not give benefits to workers, constitution of a vigilance squad to enforce labour laws in cashew factories, basic facilities in factories under the Factories Act, allocation of Rs.50 crores to the Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation and another Rs.10 crores for Cashew Workers' Apex Industrial Cooperative Society, minimum wages for workers, pension dues, a hike in pension and promotion of cashew plantations.
