Rain: loss put at Rs.392 lakhs in Thiruvananthapuram district

Thiruvananthapuram: The monsoon rain that had lashed the district for the past few days eased off on Thursday.

The damage caused by the rain is estimated at Rs.392.23 lakhs. District Collector N. Ayyappan said crop loss alone ran into Rs.374 lakhs. Crops on 509.25 hectares were damaged.

As many as 479 houses were damaged and 15 destroyed in the heavy rain. The loss on this account is calculated at Rs.18.13 lakhs.

One more relief centre was opened at Valiathura on Thursday to accommodate 35 families whose houses were in danger of being swamped by the invading sea. The Collector said 60 families had been shifted to St. Thomas Higher Secondary School at Poonthura.

An official pressnote quoting the Collector said Law Minister M. Vijayakumar would preside over a meeting to be held at the Collectorate on Friday to assess the relief works in the district. MPs, MLAs, the Mayor, district panchayat president, municipal chairmen, block panchayat presidents and officials are expected to participate in the meeting.

Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran, who visited the relief camps at Poonthura, Beemapally, Panathura and Adimalathura, directed the officials to expedite steps to strengthen the seawalls that were damaged in the monsoon. Mr. Premachandran said more facilities would be provided at the relief camps.
