German national held

on sodomy charge

NEW DELHI: A 38-year-old German national, who was here in the Capital on "philanthropic" work, was arrested at Samaipur Badli in North-West Delhi on Thursday for allegedly trying to sodomise a 12-year-old boy. He has been remanded to 14-day police custody.

According to the police, residents of Badli Gaon heard the screams of the boy coming from a house rented by the German national, Hans, and overpowered him. He was allegedly found trying to sodomise the victim. He was handed over to the police.

During interrogation, Hans revealed that he had been living in the Badli Gaon house for the past two months. The police said the accused claimed that he was into social service and "helped" poor people.

Hans also used to visit TB Hospital in the Kingsway Camp area where the victim's father was admitted. A fortnight ago, Hans met him and assured him all help. On Wednesday night, he allegedly took the boy to his rented accommodation on some pretext and tried to sexually abuse him while he was asleep. The German Embassy has been informed about the arrest.

The police said a probe was on to find out if anyone other than Hans was also involved in exploiting children.

Firing incident

NEW DELHI: Two men on a motorcycle opened fire at an auto-rickshaw driver on Ashoka Road in New Delhi on Thursday. However, the driver escaped unhurt.

The incident took place around 5-30 p.m. when the assailants fired a single round at Surender Rawat and fled from the scene.

According to the police, Surender has identified the assailants. "A monetary dispute appears to be the reason behind the incident," said a senior police officer, adding that the assailants are also auto-rickshaw drivers. A hunt has been launched for them.

DFC improves earnings

NEW DELHI: During the past three years, Delhi Finance Corporation has made significant improvement in its business and earnings. Set up by the Delhi Government to promote, develop and finance industries in the small and medium scale sectors, recent years' key financial indicators reveal significant improvements in the Corporation's overall performance.

In the financial year 2005-06, DFC's reserves increased by 33 per cent compared to the last fiscal, while the return on equity ratio also increased threefold. Similarly, debt equity ratio improved indicating lesser dependence on borrowed funds, while the capital adequacy ratio remained well above the Reserve Bank norms of nine per cent.

DFC's position of profit after tax and provisioning has also shown remarkable improvement from Rs.2.29 crores in 2003-04 to Rs.808.54 crores in 2005-06. The Corporation has also been able to reduce its lending rates besides bringing down the average cost of fund from 12 per cent in 2003-04 to 8.5 per cent in 2005-06.

Man arrested

NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old man allegedly involved in cases of murder and attempt-to-murder was arrested following an encounter near Gate No. 1 of Pragati Maidan in New Delhi on Wednesday night. A country-made firearm was recovered from his possession.

According to the police, Neeraj who owes allegiance to Satish Jat gang was involved in the murder of one J.P. Pahelwan at Bawana, and a double murder case at Ettah in Uttar Pradesh.
