Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The Speaker of the Pondicherry Assembly R. Radhakrishnan has recognised the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to be the main Opposition in the 30-member Territorial Assembly. He also announced in a release here on Friday that the DMK legislature party leader A M H Nazeem would be the Opposition leader in the House. Mr. Radhakrishnan said that there had been reports in the media quite often on the issue of status of Opposition for a political party and a necessity had therefore arisen for him to take a decision on the issue. The Speaker said that the DMK was having (next to the ruling Congress) a larger number of members (seven). Further the DMK was not participating in the government. The leader of the party had also submitted a letter to him seeking allocation of seats for the DMK legislators in the Opposition block. There were precedents in1985 and 1991 when similar situation arose and hence after an intensive study a decision had now been taken. The Congress with ten members on its side has formed a minority government in Pondicherry with the unconditional and outside support of the seven members DMK, the two member PMK and the lone member of the CPI, which together constitute the Democratic Progressive Alliance. The three Independents (two from Pondicherry and one from Karaikal) have already pledged support to the government.
