Pondicherry: The State Election Commission (SEC) will issue notifications on Saturday setting the first phase of civic polls in Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions in motion. The first phase will be held on June 24 covering the municipalities in these three regions of the Union Territory and also the five commune panchayats (Kottuchery, Neduncadu, Neravy, T R Pattinam and Tirunallar) in Karaikal region.

According to the SEC schedule, the last date for filing nominations would be June 10. Scrutiny of the nominations would take place on June 12, the last date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed for June 14. Election of the chairmen and councillors of the municipalities would take place on party basis. Voters would therefore have two votes to cast in so far as municipal councils are concerned to elect the chairman and municipal councillor.

As far as panchayats are concerned a voter would have to cast three votes (One each for the election of a member to the commune panchayat and Village panchayat and one for the Village panchayat president.) Election of commune panchayat council member alone would be held on party basis. Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipalities and the Villianoor commune panchayat would go to second phase of poll on June 27.

The third phase of poll scheduled for July 1 would cover the remaining four commune panchayats in Pondicherry (Ariyankuppam, Bahoor, Mannadipet and Nettapakkam).
