MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin removed the country's chief prosecutor in an apparent effort to maintain a power balance between rival factions in the Kremlin ahead of crucial presidential elections in 2008. Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov was dismissed by the Federation Council (upper House) of Parliament on Friday. Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov read a letter from Mr. Putin asking the House to relieve the chief prosecutor of his duties on the basis of his voluntary resignation request. No reason was given for the request.
