Staff Reporter
KOZHIKODE: Sahayi, a society dedicated to medical care, will organise a collective of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the district to pressure the Government for conferring All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) status for Kozhikode Medical College at Press Club Hall here on Sunday. Mayor M.Bhaskaran will inaugurate the meeting of collective of NGOs at 4.30 p.m. on Sunday. P.M.A.Salam, MLA will preside. E.K.Siddique, general secretary, Sahayi and others alleged at a press conference here on Thursday that the bureaucrats in Thiruvananthapuram had `conspired' to confer AIIMS status on the Medical College there. "Now what remains is the signing of the Health Minister on the dotted line. All other arrangements have been made (for conferring AIIMS status for Thiruvananthapuram Mediucal College)," Mr.Siddique alleged. He demanded the Health Minister to order an inquiry on to the `sabotage' of the case of Kozhikode Medical College by the bureaucrats. He also alleged that Kozhikode Medical College authorities did not show enough enthusiasm in pursuing the case of the Medical College here. So far nobody has done any study on Medical Colleges in the State so as to decide as to which College should be conferred AIIMS status. He said that once the Kozhikode Medical College was conferred AIIMS Status, the Centre would provide funds to it. The State Government, which was so far funding the College, could thus divert the fund to other hospitals, including the Beach Hospital.
