Congress dares coalition to seek dissolution of Assembly

Only elections can be a test of popularity of JD(S), says Ugrappa

BANGALORE: The Congress said on Saturday that if the coalition of the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party agreed with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's statement that the results of elections to the Legislative Council from the Legislative Assembly were an indication of the popularity of the Government, it should recommend the dissolution of the Assembly.

Addressing presspersons here, Congress spokesperson V.S. Ugrappa, MLC, said Mr. Kumaraswamy had said the Janata Dal (S), which had 58 members in the Legislative Assembly, secured 71 votes, indicating that a few legislators from other parties had voted for its candidates. Mr. Kumaraswamy had said these legislators supported the Janata Dal (S) for its performance. Mr. Ugrappa said that if the Chief Minister felt his party had become more popular, he should recommend the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly. He alleged the Janata Dal (S) used money and muscle power in the Council elections. On the Chief Minister's remark that the Congress had not informed the Janata Dal (S) about fielding Legislative Council Chairman V.R. Sudarshan, Mr. Ugrappa said his party did not require the support of a party which formed the government along with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
