PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry airport is all set to re-start passenger service in over a decade.

Jagson Airlines Ltd., which signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Administration in February to start operation, will position an 18-seater aircraft at the airport on Sunday.

Vinod Malhotra, general manager (marketing and sales), said: "We will position a Dornier aircraft on June 4 at the airport and start operations in a couple of days." Confirming this, the Air Traffic Manager at the Pondicherry airport, K. Sendilvel, told The Hindu,"the aircraft will be coming by Sunday noon and the date of commencement of operation is yet to be finalised."

The runway and the passenger lounge had been spruced up and the machinery for pre-embarking checking, which includes luggage scanning, had been set up.

Initially, the Government would provide crash fire tenders. Later, the airport would procure tenders for the operation.

Training programme for those responsible for pre-embarking checking was yet to be completed.

The State police and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security would train selected police personnel.
