THRISSUR: The Sankaracharya of Kanchi, Jayendra Saraswathi, has said that Dalits should be protected and uplifted for ensuring the sustenance of the culture of Dharma enshrined in the Vedas. He was inaugurating the year-long centenary celebrations of the installation of the late Chandrasekhara Saraswathi as the head of the Kanchi Math at a function at Paramekkavu Temple Agrasala here on Saturday. Emphasising that an awareness of Dharma, as enshrined in Indian culture, should be created among people right from their childhood, the Sankaracharya said the country's rich cultural lineage could be preserved only by protecting the traditions and customs. The function was organised by the Kerala Brahmana Sabha. Earlier, inaugurating the annual meeting of the Kerala Jyothisha Parishad, he said the Kanchi Viswa Vidya Peetham might consider giving recognition to courses in astrology being conducted by the parishad in Kerala, after evaluating its syllabus. The Sankaracharya offered prayers at Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple and made several offerings, including two golden `padukams,' together weighing about 450 g, in the morning.
