Thiruvananthapuram: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said the State police should be the "nightmare of law-breakers and friends of ordinary citizens."

Video-conferencing with District Superintendents of Police at the Government Secretariat here on Saturday, the Minister said the police should respect the dignity and rights of people irrespective of their financial or social status.

He said a stable law and order situation was imperative for implementing the large-scale development schemes envisaged by the Government. The citizens of literate and modern Kerala require policemen who respect their dignity and individuality, not those who coerce them into obedience.

At the same time, the police should show no tolerance to criminals and mafia groups. Criminal activity should be crushed and the life and property of citizens should be protected at all costs. The Home Minister warned the police against resorting to use of force merely to display the "strength and spirit" of the department. The police should wield authority with discretion and not passion. "There is no place in the Police Department for those seeking revenge or making a show of authority," he said.

He said it was imperative to modernise the police force. The Police Department should constantly modernise and upgrade itself.
