Maoists attack

revenue staff

MAHBUBNAGAR: Maoists attacked a team of revenue officials which was distributing white ration cards to beneficiaries at Komatikunta in Lingala mandal on Saturday afternoon and damaged IRIS cameras and computers.

Meanwhile, Officer on Special Duty M. Raviprakash, while described the act as foolish, said it was strange that Maoists were creating hurdles even in distribution of ration cards, which were meant to benefit the poor and downtrodden. - Correspondent

Ministers to meet

on Bt Cotton price

Hyderabad: Ministers of Agriculture of seven States - Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh - will meet here on June 9 to discuss over-pricing of Bt Cotton seed. Other issues relating to seed and pesticides will also be discussed at the meeting, according to sources. — Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Information Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir on Saturday defended the right of journalists to cover public functions organised by the Government. He was referring to the row over Panchayat Raj Minister J. C. Diwakar Reddy ordering a reporter of a TV channel out of a meeting in Anantapur on Wednesday.Mr Shabbir said that following protests by journalists, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy asked him to go into legal aspects of the issue and submit a report. — Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Law Common Entrance Test (LAWCET) 2006 was conducted at 15 centres all over the State on Saturday. According to the Convenor of LAWCET 2006, R. Venkata Rao, the rank lists would be announced on July 15. — Staff Reporter

Mining policy to focus

on relief package

VIJAYAWADA: Union Minister of State for Mines T. Subbarami Reddy said that the new mining policy being finalised by the Government would accord top priority to providing relief and rehabilitation to evacuees while taking up mining activity in a forest area. The Government would clear new projects only after it is convinced about the relief package, he said. — Staff Reporter
