Criticises Bharatiya Janata Party stand on statehood for Telangana

ANANTAPUR : Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu has accused the Congress of treating some criminals as leaders and utilising them to settle political scores. Criminals had been making threat calls by using cellphones from their jail cells, he alleged. "The recent expose of the `illegal activities' going on in jails by a television channel/newspaper shows the sorry state of affairs in jails," he said while addressing a press conference here on Saturday.

He alleged that TDP ZPTC member from Roddam in the district Narasimhulu had received threat calls from persons lodged in jails. TDP activists and leaders would not be cowed down by such tactics, Mr. Naidu asserted.

He sought to know whether Congress leaders would have survived had the TDP Government adopted similar tactics when in power.

On the killing of K. Suryapratap Reddy and his family joining the Congress later, Mr. Naidu said it was an example of `YS' mark of political compromises.

Delimitation

On the delimitation of Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies, the TDP president said they would fight it out in the Supreme Court if the Government moved the court against High Court order. On the BJP taking up the mantle of movement statehood for Telangana, Mr. Naidu said it had exposed their opportunistic politics. The TDP had distanced itself from the BJP on small States and secularism issues.
